How to Sell Dota 2 Items on Steam and Other Platforms

Whether you’re investing money in the game or enjoying it for free, playing Dota 2 will earn you skins that can be sold for real money. There are two ways to sell the items, which we have explained in the following article; using Steam and using a third-party site.

Using Steam to Sell Dota 2 Items

Trading items in Dota 2 and other games is supported by Steam who has created a marketplace for it. Using this marketplace is the legit and safe way of selling items in Dota 2. This will guarantee that the trade happens smoothly and that any money that is earned ends up in your Steam wallet.

To sell Dota 2 items through Steam, just follow the below steps:

  • Open up your Steam client and login to your account
  • Hover over the COMMUNITY tab with your mouse
  • In the list that appears, click on MARKET
  • Click on the button that says Sell an item
  • Click on Dota 2 to browse all items that can be sold
  • Pick the item you would like to sell and click Sell
  • Enter your desired selling price of the item
  • Click the button that says OK, put it up for sale

That’s it! Your item is now up for sale and will be listed in the marketplace for buyers to find it. Once it has been bought by a player, the money will be transferred to your Steam account.

Do note that a fee of 15% is added to all items that you put up for sale. For instance, if you decide to sell a Dota 2 item for €1, it will be listed at €1.15. Whenever it is sold, you will receive €1 while Steam gets to keep €0.15.

Also note that any money received from selling Dota 2 items on Steam can’t be withdrawn. You can use the money to buy games for yourself or other people though. With the latter option you can ask the people to pay for the games by sending you money on PayPal or Skrill. This way you are able to get cash in your hand from Dota 2 items that you sell even though Steam isn’t supporting it.

Selling Dota 2 Items on Third-Party Sites

These days there are many websites (which are not associated with Steam) that allow you to sync your Steam account to them. This allows you to sell your items through the websites. The advantage of doing this, as opposed to selling on Steam, is that your profits will be credited to the website account, which can then be withdrawn using one of many payment options.

However, as these websites are not supported by Steam you are never protected. While many of these third-party websites are legit and want to run a serious business, there’s always a risk that you could lose your items and money.

Some of the third-party websites that allow you to sell Dota 2 items include dmarket.com, gamerall.com and lootmarket.com. While the process of selling can vary slightly between these websites, it’s a really simple one which usually consists of the following steps:

  • Visit the third-party website and click on login
  • Steam will now appear in the web browser
  • Enter the login details to your Steam account
  • Your Steam account is now synced to the website
  • At the website, navigate to the seller’s section
  • You will now see all of your items on Steam
  • Find the Dota 2 item that you would like to sell
  • Set a price on the item and complete the trade

Some websites allow you to choose how your item should be sold; either by trading the item to the website or by keeping it on Steam. With the latter option you have to be ready to accept a trade order on Steam, making the first alternative a much more convenient one.

No matter how you decide to sell your Dota 2 items though, the money will be credited to your website account. From here you can cash it out using PayPal or a range of other payment methods.

Do note that you may be required to provide the third-party website with your Steam API and Steam trading URL. If so, the API can be found here while your trading URL can be found by going to Steam Account –> Community –> Market –> View Inventory –> Trade Offers –> Who can Send me Trade Offers?

How Much Do Dota 2 Items Sell For?

As you can imagine, this will vary widely depending on the rarity of the item. The vast majority of Dota 2 items only sell for a couple of cents, up to a few euros at best. However, there are indeed couriers, hero skins and full sets that are incredibly rare and sought after, which can sell for up to several hundred euros or even above €1,000.

Can I Cash Out Money Earned From Items Sold in Dota 2?

If you’re selling through Steam you can’t. However, if you’re using a third-party website you will be able to withdraw any money earned from your items to PayPal, Skrill and other payment methods (depending on what’s supported at the website).

How Can I Get Items in Dota 2?

After every real matched played (in other words not a custom game, but a real Dota 2 match), there’s a chance of receiving an item. You can also receive items from seasonal events, such as battle passes that are active before and during the world championship. Not to mention that items and treasure chests that grant you items can be purchased in-game.
