Getting Better at Dota 2 – 10 Ways of Improving Your Game

get good dota 2

Dota 2 is a very complex game with many layers to it. Whether you’re a total noob or somewhat experienced player, there is a ton to learn. In the following article I haven’t mentioned everything, but I have settled with 10 crucial things that helped me when I was wondering how to get better at Dota 2 myself. Let’s get right to it!

1. Play as a Team and Not as an Individual

One of the most common mistakes that players in Dota 2 make, which often leads to a loss, is focusing too much on their own game. Whether we’re talking about picking positions, choosing heroes or last-hitting creeps, you have to look at the whole picture.

The first step in getting better in Dota 2 is playing as a team. There is no pride in having the most kills or least deaths if that is jeopardizing your chances of winning the match.

When you’re picking heroes, don’t just pick your favorite one. Pick the one that goes best with your team. If someone wants to play mid and you want too, you could either roll for it, or, if the player has a better track record, you might just have to give it up. Simply for the sake of the team and winning the match.

2. Accept Mistakes and Don’t Fight

I don’t know how many matches I have played where I have witnessed team members whining at each other for mistakes and throwing around insults like there was no tomorrow. You have probably witnessed this too. Maybe you have been the one whining or you might have been name-calling to defend yourself.

No matter which end of the stick you’re on, just stop doing it. This type of behavior is extremely bad for the game. So much energy is wasted on none-sense instead of focusing on winning. If someone is playing bad, either accept it or try correcting them in a positive manner. If someone is whining at you, consider muting them. It helps.

3. If No One Leads, Be the Leader

If you’re wondering how to get better at Dota 2, you may not have the confidence to lead a team. However, if no one else is leading it, this is exactly what you should do. As already mentioned, this is a team game and if everyone is running around like headless chickens with no common objective, you can’t expect to win. Take the lead and try to achieve something.

Without experience and enough knowledge of the game, it may of course be that you’ll lead your team into a loss. Don’t be bothered by this though. You learn by doing mistakes and if you didn’t lead, you probably would have lost anyway. Keep taking initiatives whenever the opportunity reveals itself and you’ll become a better and better leader – something that every match desperately needs.

4. Communicate With Your Team

Communication is one of the key factors in becoming better at Dota 2. Even if you aren’t going to be the leader, you still have to speak with your teammates. If a hero is missing on the lane you’re on, you need to let them know – that is crucial information.

You must also share other things, such as if you see an enemy hero grabbing a double damage rune or notice the enemy team attacking Roshan. It’s also not a bad idea to tell your team what items you are going for so that they can give you input or adapt to them.

5. Know All of the Heroes by Heart

There is no shortcut to getting good at Dota 2. If you want to play well, you have to know everything about the game and this starts with the heroes. It is very difficult to pick a hero that goes well with your team if you don’t know what the heroes that they have chosen are doing. It is even more difficult to play against an enemy on a lane if you don’t know if he could stun you and instantly kill you at a certain HP.

Knowing all of the heroes by heart is crucial. So, if you want to get better at Dota 2, you need to start playing all heroes just to learn them. Once you know them, you can focus on mastering a few.

6. The Mini Map Is Your Best Friend

When you’re only looking at your hero and its surroundings, you’re completely in the dark. You can’t possibly know if you’re getting jumped by someone from the enemy team who has decided to ambush you. This is why you have to make it a habit of quickly glancing over the mini-map on a regular basis. If you want to get better at Dota 2, you need to know where everyone is at all times. If someone is missing, you have to be wary about this and play cautiously.

7. Always Carry a TP and Be Ready to Use It

Dota 2 is a very situational game and therefore it would be wrong of me to say that you should always TP when you notice that a team member is getting jumped or a tower is about to fall. You should, however, always be prepared to do it. Remember, it’s a team game.

8. Choose a Role and Stick to It

There are five different roles in Dota 2 and if you want to get better at the game, you need to know them and play them as they should be played.

  • Hard Carry (safe-lane)
  • Active Carry (mid-lane)
  • Utility Core (off-lane)
  • Semi-Support
  • Hard Support

The hard carry must focus only on farming to become very powerful in mid/late game. Making gold and not losing gold from dying is a top priority.

The active carry should farm a lot as well. However, he should also initiate fights and put pressure on the enemy when the time is right.

The utility core should play with the team at all times to secure map control. This hero should buy situational items that the team needs.

The semi-support should possibly buy some wards and if possible, support teammates by moving around the map. Unlike the hard support, the semi-support should try to get some items that improve fight impact. For instance, blink dagger or refresher orb.

The hard support should buy most if not all of the wards to make sure that vision is great for the team and not so great for the enemy. He should also make sure that the hard carry gets a good start by harassing the enemies on the lane. Farming is rarely on the map for a hard support.

9. Make Sure That the Map Is Warded

In most matches, map vision is a big key to winning. Without it, you’re pretty much doomed. As much as it is the support’s job to ward, helping out is something that a lot of players could do to get better at Dota 2.

You may not want to spend all of your gold on warding, but if the support isn’t, for whatever reason he has, you need to do it. At least so if you want to have a chance at winning. It sucks, but you can’t always have the perfect team that is doing everything correctly.

10. A Match Is Dynamic – Never Give Up

Unfortunately, it’s not too uncommon to find that players are throwing in the towel as soon as things aren’t going their way. This is a fatal mistake as there are countless examples of Dota 2 matches that have turned even though things have looked very grim. The later the game goes, the more volatile it gets. A good team fight and you’re suddenly on top with a push that is winning the match.

Getting better at Dota 2 is not just about how you actually play, but a big part of it is attitude. If you keep fighting and utilize your energy into doing your best instead of giving up and playing half-arsed, I can promise you that you will improve your win-ratio quite a lot.
